The Copenhagen Street Dog is not just another hot dog.  It is an extra-long, juicy sausage that is beech wood smoked and has that original snap that makes American hot dogs jealous. Then again, is it really a hot dog? No, it is a Danish pølse. It is virtually the only street meat of Copenhagen, with the pølsevogn (hot dog wagon) being more ubiquitous in Denmark than

Starbucks in NYC. Revolving Dansk has recreated an all-natural version of the traditional pølse, the Copenhagen Street Dog, using old world Danish sausage making techniques and classical Scandinavian spices. This means all of the smoky, traditional flavor, but with no nitrates, hormones, or antibiotics, and only natural ingredients.

Pølser

Røde Pølser

Røde Pølser are the traditional pølser of Denmark, which are bright red in color and have a peppery, smoked flavor. Røde Pølser are best prepared lightly boiled with garlic and bacon to keep them juicy and flavorful.

Grillpølser

Grillpølser are the brown sausages popular at the pølsevogn, with a savory taste and crispy casing. They are best prepared grilled, to lock in the flavor and add to that natural snap.

Danish Flavor. Danish Style.

Unlike an American hot dog, a pølse is sweet, savory, and juicy, with a flavor that hits you at the first bite, and lingers well after devouring it. The taste comes from the Danish combination of spices like nutmeg, allspice, and cardamom, and the smoky flavor of smoking the pølse for hours. It’s Danish perfectionism in sausage form.

OH Snap!

How sausage got it’s snap back. It’s sad really. Frankfurters migrating to the US several generations ago, only to be stripped of their casings and made to soak in lukewarm water before slapped into a soggy bun. We are sorry, Americanized frankfurters, there is nothing we can do for you. We can, however, bring back that snap! As your neighbors to the North, we bring Danish sausages triumphantly, similar to how franks used to be, with a natural casing and that amazing sound from the days of old.

Red vs Brown

Rød pølseGrillpølse
The Great Pølse Debate
Red or Brown? The purists in Denmark would go for the røde pølse (red sausage), as it is the most traditional in Denmark, with a long history of people knowing Danish pølser by their bright red color. They are best lightly boiled in water with garlic, onion and a splash of vinegar and just a little bacon to make them ultra juicy with a smoky bacon flavor. Then again, the brown grillpølse (grilled sausage) is a favorite at the pølsevogn (sausage wagon) in Copenhagen, grilled to perfection with a crispy skin. In reality, though, both can be boiled or grilled, so it is really up to you.

Size Matters

The Danish hot dog is longer than most, sticking out from the bun on each side. The history in Denmark says that it was to taste the pølse to make sure it is good, but trust us, it is good. But, let’s face it, a longer pølse just looks cooler. We are sticking with sticking out!

Danish way in the USA

Copenhagen Street Dog follows the farming practices of Denmark, meaning that we have found a way to make our pølser gluten free, antibiotic free, and GMO free. For those of us in the know, GMO’s are scary, and outlawed in all countries in the European Union. For those who don’t know, isn’t it kind of crazy that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) are allowed in the US, and not anywhere else? That’s why for us, the GMOs are MIA.

How is it that we were able to take these Danish quality standards and produce pølser in the USA? Well, we insisted on working directly with a local farm, who happened to have the same quality standards that we did. This means that everything is from the earth, the way the New Nordic movement promotes. Our pigs eat food grown from the gardens of the farm where they are raised, with a strictly vegetarian diet, no modified food, and no antibiotics. No antibiotics in them means no added antibiotics in us. We feel pretty healthy about that!

Eating Pølse the Danish Way

We can Dansk if we want to! A proper Danish hot dog requires a toasty bun, a pølse cooked the right way, and executing the toppings in the proper quantities in the right order. It starts with a thin line of ketchup, mustard and Danish remoulade. Next, it is topped with chopped onions, and a heap of fried onions. Lastly, it is topped with sweet, crisp sweet Scandinavian pickles. The outcome is sweet, savory, salty, and crispy. Why mess with perfection?

What is a pølse?

A pølse is an extra-long, beech wood smoked sausage with a snap that is found on almost every street corner in Copenhagen. Copenhagen Street Dog produces the two main types of pølser found in Denmark, the classic Røde Pølse, which is bright red in color, and the popular brown Grillpølse.
